I’ve been experimenting with incorporating abstract ink work into my paintings, inspired by my long obsession with aerial imagery of the earth – often the most fraught components of the earth. The colors and patterns created by mineral extraction, chemical refinement and other industrial processes are beautiful in the most complicated and troubling way, and seem to me to be a compelling counterpoint to the beauty we find in the nature and wildlife that are often being destroyed by those processes. In this piece, a burrowing owl is veined with color inspired by copper mine tailings found in Arizona.
